“In the fields of physical security and information security, access control is the selective restriction of access to a place or other resource. The act of accessing may mean consuming, entering or using. Permission to access a resource is called authorisation.”
To put it simply, access control is the control of access to a location or information. Companies may implement access control to stop unauthorised personnel entering a specific location, a location which contains sensitive information such as personal employee documents, for example.
Well, when a credential (usually a pin or a card) is presented to a reader, the reader sends the credential’s information to a control panel, which is a highly reliable processor. The control panel then compares the information to an access control list, either grants or denies the presenter access, and then sends a transaction log to a database. When the presenter is denied access, the door remains locked.
However, if the credential information matches that in the access control list, the panel operates a ‘relay’, which unlocks the door. The control panel then ignores a ‘door open’ signal to prevent an alarm sounding, to alert security to intruders. Usually, access readers provides feedback to whoever presented the credentials, using a red light if access is denied, and a green one if access is granted.
Many of our customers choose to use Access Control to help up the security in their property whilst also being able to know where people are as well as providing limited access.
